Kid jokes are sometimes funny. Sometimes not. But kids love to tell them! What’s really going on when your child tells you the latest joke he heard on the playground?

Why are teddy bears never hungry?
…Because they’re always stuffed!

Telling jokes helps kids learn to look at the world from a different perspective. When she realizes being stuffed with food and being stuffed with cotton sound the same, but means something different, it’s funny.

Humor also strengthens kids in mind and body. Laughter benefits our systems in multiple ways.

Benefits of Laughter

What’s the difference between a guitar and a fish?
…You can tune a guitar, but you can’t tuna fish.

Kids love to laugh. And giggles revitalize the body. A good guffaw increases the flow of oxygen and relaxes muscles. Similarly, sharing chuckles with a friend releases endorphins and stimulates circulation.

The end result of all this mirth is the relief of stress and a stronger immune system. So, to help your child be healthier, teach her some kid jokes. Just don’t try to train your comedian too young.

Stages of Humor

Did you hear the joke about the roof?
…Never mind, it’s over your head.

Younger children like to laugh. But kids don’t really understand joke-telling until kindergarten age. At five or six, your child understands wordplay enough to appreciate knock-knock jokes.

Knock knock
…Who’s there?
…Justin who?
Justin time for dinner!

Nevertheless, don’t be surprised if your offspring tell a lot of nonsensical kid jokes at first. It takes time to develop a good sense of humor.

Help out by laughing at unexpected events. Also, tell funny stories yourself. And of course, teach your child some jokes he can share with the family or friends. Then laugh when he tells them (even if it’s the same joke over and over).
